National Trucking Carrier Safety Records: FMCSA Crash, Inspection, and Out-of-Service Data

Federal safety records for major national trucking carriers operating on U.S. and Arizona highways: crash involvements (fatal/injury/tow), roadside inspection counts, and vehicle and driver out-of-service rates compared against national averages, from FMCSA SAFER company snapshots.

This dataset compiles federal safety records for major national motor carriers — fleets whose trucks operate across the country, including on Arizona highways. All figures come from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's SAFER company snapshot system and cover the trailing 24 months as of the retrieval dates of October 2 and October 4, 2026.

How to read these numbers

Three things matter before reading any table on this page:

  1. Crash figures are involvement records, not fault findings. FMCSA records reportable crashes a carrier's vehicles were involved in, regardless of who caused them. A carrier can appear in these records for crashes caused entirely by other drivers. Nothing on this page states or implies fault.
  2. Fleet size drives raw totals. Larger fleets drive more miles and record more involvements. That is why this page presents both raw totals and a per-1,000-power-units rate — and why neither number alone tells the whole story (exposure also varies by freight type, routes, and miles per truck, which these records do not capture).
  3. All but one of the carriers on this page hold a Satisfactory federal safety rating — the highest of FMCSA's three rating levels — as of the data date. The exception, Penske Truck Leasing, is unrated, which under FMCSA's system means no compliance review has produced a rating; it is not an adverse finding.

Exposure-adjusted rates use power units (trucks/tractors) as the denominator because FMCSA snapshots report fleet size uniformly. The rate does not adjust for miles driven per truck, freight type, or operating region. Landstar's low rate, for example, reflects an owner-operator model where many registered units may drive differing mileage profiles; United Parcel Service's fleet includes large numbers of local delivery vehicles alongside tractor-trailers; and Ryder Truck Rental and Penske Truck Leasing are vehicle-leasing fleets whose registered units are largely operated by their customers, all of which affects comparability at the low end of this table.

Table 3: Roadside inspections and out-of-service rates, trailing 24 months

A vehicle is placed "out of service" when an inspection finds a violation serious enough that the vehicle may not be driven until it is fixed; the same applies to drivers with disqualifying violations. National averages per FMCSA: 22.26% of vehicle inspections and 6.67% of driver inspections result in out-of-service orders.

Methodology

  • Source: FMCSA SAFER company snapshots (safer.fmcsa.dot.gov), retrieved October 2 and October 4, 2026. Crash and inspection figures cover the trailing 24 months as reported by FMCSA. Carrier USDOT numbers were resolved against FMCSA's public motor carrier census (data.transportation.gov) before retrieval.
  • Carrier set: 61 major national for-hire carriers with significant fleet sizes; carriers are identified by USDOT number to avoid name ambiguity. The set was expanded from 22 to 41 and then to 61 carriers on October 4, 2026, and will continue to expand in future updates.
  • Crash definitions: FMCSA counts "reportable" crashes — those involving a fatality, an injury transported for medical attention, or a vehicle towed from the scene. Fatal/injury/tow columns follow FMCSA's categories; a single crash appears in one severity category.
  • What this data cannot tell you: fault, cause, location of individual crashes, or miles driven. FMCSA itself cautions that crash involvement records are not safety rankings.
  • Updates: figures refresh with each dataset revision; the data-as-of date above governs.

AZ Crash Data is published by Ironwood Media Group LLC. This dataset is compiled from public federal records for informational purposes.
